1995 Christmas Day

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       15.12.95.bk20.76/occasions

            Blizzards swirling Aberdeen
            Battering the beaches
            Filling hills with drifting fluff
whiter than their flocks of sheep
            Icier and all pervasive
            -
            In softer Pennine spaces
gentle flurries leave a starchy whiteness
            freshly washed and ironed
Garment worn to celebrate the winter
            show its finery of branches
            extended elegant in golden air

Across the vasteness sheep crop on
Rought coated bullocks search in tussocks
            tasty morsels salad-crisp
            In their refrigerated world
            ruminating on the distance
            -
            Power station puffs
            Cooling towers in huddled groups
            squat along the Yorkshire Plain
            limned in icy sunlit air
            towards the far horizon
            Cloud-forming in scintillated sunshine
            -
            Valleys roaming down along
            softening slopes of white
            Forests curving out the line
            with spiky sparkling branches
            glooming darkened trunks
            -
            On gentle rounded hillsides
            windmills
            Figures in a landscape
making merry with flirty winter zephyrs
            -
..and I would dance with a windmill
            over hills and down valleys
dance with a windmill to the distance
